Obituary for Shirley Giles Goode

Jonesville -- Shirley Delois Giles Goode was born on May 1, 1942 to the late Enormas and Lake Copeland Giles. Shirley attended Adamsburg Primary School and, later, Sims High School. Growing up as a child, Shirley and her family were sharecroppers who picked cotton. She also cleaned and cared for children for several other households. As a teenager, she accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior, was baptized by the late Rev. J.W. Sanders at Bethel Baptist Church, and later joined New Emmanuel Chapel Baptist Church. On June 3, 1962, she married the man she says she “prayed for," Herbert Goode, and from this love, she bore and raised three children. After getting married, Shirley would move on to be one of the first few blacks to integrate the textile mills in Union County, retiring with 38 years of service as a weaver for Milliken and Company at the Cedar Hill Plant.

In the late 1970’s, Shirley wanted to do more to help those in need. As a result, she formed the L.G. Gospel Singers, named after the late Rev. Ophelia McKissick. The L.G. Gospel Singers would run a span of 30 years, conducting an annual program to raise money help those in the community who were homeless, hungry, hospitalized or any other need. The last major need effort organized by the L.G. Gospel Singers was a drive to help victims of Hurricane Floyd in 1999, rallying to fill an 18’ truck full of new items and droving the truck down to Princeville, NC. It was there Shirley and Herbert, along with other friends and relatives, were able to meet the late Rev. F.C. Barnes (Rough Side of the Mountain) and distribute items to those in need.

As a faithful member of New Emmanuel Chapel Baptist Church, she was on the Deaconess Board and served as President. She was also a Missionary and would often visit the sick and the elderly, cooking, cleaning, praying for, and singing with those that were shut-in. Shirley also started the first Intercessory Prayer at New Emmanuel Chapel Baptist Church, where she would go to church before service would start and pray. As the Church membership grew she became an Advisor to the All-Male Chorus where she assisted with “giving out and pitching” hymns and vocals. She was an original member of the Rutherford Chorus where she served for 50 years until her health began to fail.

Shirley made her home and resided at 212 Mount Joy Church Road in Jonesville. She is survived by a loving and devoted husband, Herbert Goode, Sr; a faithful and loving daughter, Angelia Goode, of the home; two loving sons, Herbert (Cheryl) Goode Jr. and Gowon (Kara) Goode; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren; one brother, Roosevelt (Gail) Giles; seven sisters, Gertrude Goode, Jean (Nathaniel, Jr.) Dogan, Dorothy Ngongang, Vergie Glenn, Mary Watkins, Sandra McBeth and Ruthie Giles; one sister-in-law; Mildred Giles; one brother-in-law, Calvin Goode; one uncle; James Copeland; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents, a granddaughter, Alecia Goode, a brother, James Giles, and a sister, Emily Land.

Funeral services for Mrs. Shirley Giles Goode will be held on Monday, October, 22, 2018, at 12:00 p.m. at New Emanuel Baptist Church, 2293 Pea Ridge Highway, Jonesville, SC, with Rev. James Mason officiating. She will lie in state from 11 A.M. until the hour of service. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
